My dear friend Chris Fox at lunch one day told me about her family could not get together in December so they put together a Christmas in July party when they all could get together. Good Bye 2014. Hello 2015 Adventure

Good Day Folks,

2014 was quite the year. I call it a building and renewal year adventure. Two of my books won awards.

James Saves the Moon won a Gold Medal Best Children’s Fantasy/SciFI from Readers Favorite. Helga Returns won a Best Children’s Book ages 9-12 from Turning the Pages Magazine. Traveled with double vision from Michigan to Orlando in April and received my award from Turning the Pages award ceremony. It was a lot of fun. Delighted to meet author Mcv Egan in person. We have been friends for years on facebook. My pal Stacey Rourke was there and many other authors.

While beginning the editing process of my 4th book Amongst the Clouds in February/March and Turning 50 I ended up in the hospital with two bleeding aneurisms. I lost six days, spent 4 nights and had surgery to stop the bleeding. I now have two platinum coils in my head. So I guess my head has gone platinum. LOL I was lucky walked out of the hospital. My recovery has been remarkable.

Growing up, we all had imaginary friends, but James’s pals are so awesome that one can easily believe they are real. It all begins with a beautiful and unusual cloud that seemed to be stuck in place. As James daydreams about its mysterious beauty, he is launched on an unexpected adventure in the company of his imaginary friends. As they try to discover the meaning of the cloud, they end up becoming key players in a battle in which rivals fight to take control. From flying on a blue dragon’s back to their eager search for a lost key that opens a spell book, James and his friends have a day packed with suspense and drama. However, they still manage to get him home by dinnertime so he can tell his family all about it. Amongst the Clouds by Wendy Nystrom is an awesome book that young and old will enjoy.

In Amongst the Clouds, author Wendy Nystrom does a brilliant job of describing how high a child’s imagination can actually fly. The main protagonist dozes off and ends up in the middle of a lucid dream that teaches him a number of valuable lessons about the importance of loyalty. The story is well written and contains a lot of characters with which kids can easily identify. At the same time, Wendy Nystrom shares a little bit of Icelandic culture with the reader, enabling him or her to easily grasp the context of the adventure. The language is vibrant and appropriate for children, and the book includes many illustrations that add to the mental image so aptly formed by her words.

I was also able to finish my 5th Book Sleigh Ride in time for Christmas release. Another fun adventure: James and his pals help a polar bear and delivers Santa another sleigh since his was broken accidentally by his reindeer.

Blade Graphics designed this graphic in the fall. I just love this. I can have it placed on stuff, hats, mugs, cinch sacks, totes etc.

Authorpalooza event went well in November and will be organizing another one in June of 2015 at Big Rapids Community Library. Had a fabulous team to work with for this event. Spoke in a classroom where the kids were all excited about writing their own book. Spoke at a University Creative writing class. Then the year ended with having my first book James Saves the Moon is listed in a catalog at a new company Called Booksurf a home book shopping of signed books created by Stacey Rourke. The holidays were spectacular. We drove to Arizona to spend with my wonderful in-laws. We stopped in NM to visit more relatives on the way had a blast. Then four corners and met the in-laws at the Grand Canyon. We explored for a couple of days. Then a wonderful Christmas at their winter home in Arizona. The family loved the trip.

I am very excited about 2015. Hoping my books get into the hands of many kids. My writing is coming back. I am working on my urban fantasy novel New Moon Brethren and 6th children’s book Magic Carousel. I joined the local writers group and enjoying those meetings. I have an event with three other authors at Biggby Coffee in February. Susan Stec, Jeni Decker and Becca Vincenza.

2015 is becoming a wonderful adventure. More adventures on the way I am sure.

Yuletide Adventures!

Good Day Folks,

My family and I have a fun and exciting Yuletide Adventure planned with family. We are all excited. I will be not available much so I wanted to tell all my family, friends, fans and peers. Have a wonderful Yuletide Adventure.

Children Books Recent Release and More Magical Adventures!

Today I have decided to talk about my books that I have written and are available.

I have 5 published chapter books for ages 7-12 available now. James and Syvok adventures series is fun filled adventures of a young boy who lives in the Magical Island Iceland. I will start with the most recent one Adventure 5 Sleigh Ride

Santa’s reindeer broke his sleigh! James and Syvok get whisked away to try to help save the day with Matthias, the dragon. Along the way there are delays, pondering the question-will Santa have a sleigh in time to deliver the presents? Come along with old friends, meet new friends, and enjoy the Yuletide adventure!

And then after the special rescue they are off to Santa to save the day!This is one of those books that just draws you in from the cover! I got to see the print edition a couple days ago. The way the cover just pops with that realistic sparkle. Ah! Its gorgeous. The words flow right into the illustrations and the story becomes a page turner! If your children love Christmas stories with fun, adventures, and more-this is the one to have arrive at your door! I love how Wendy writes for children to enjoy. She draws the adventure, adds a little mystery, and wraps it up with surprises and fun in a realistic way. This particular book is one I would pass down to my grandchildren, and will make a holiday tradition (like her other holiday book- Tomfoolery and 13 Yule Lads of Iceland).Don’t forget to check out the first four adventures that James and Syvok embark on! And enjoy the newest holiday delight! I know my children couldn’t wait to read it, and are still loving it! Old Hag, a witch, coveted the key and cast a transformation spell to steal Ranni’s home and do more evil. The friends discover what she is up to, but it may be too late to stop her malicious plan.Amongst the Clouds (A James and Syvok Adventure Book 4) is a fun book young readers will like. Wendy Nystrom, who created this lovely story, writes wonderfully well. Her characters are unique and the plot is original. Although this is the fourth book in the series, the author included sufficient background information about the characters and previous events, so I was able to understand certain activities taking place. The personalities and antics of Old Hag, her cowardly husband, Ragamuffin, and pet, Yule Cat, are amusing. Wendy Nystrom will keep children entertained with her exciting fantasy stories. They will enjoy this Amongst the Clouds adventure.

One of my favorite Icelandic legends is the 13 Yule Lads. More Christmas adventures. This book has three adventures in one book. The first Yule Lad arrives December 12th.

The book is a great combination of imagination, holiday spirit, and tradition. The author has managed to bring them together and weave a delightful story. It is a book that can be read by adults, too. The book can also be an exposure to the cultural traditions in another country

Tomfoolery and 13 Yule Lads of Iceland (James and Syvok) by Wendy Nystrom is the 3rd book in the James and Syvok Adventure seriesis inspired by Icelandic folklore where the lads bring gifts and mischief to children the 13 nights before Christmas. Once James and his magical friend Syvok meet the 13 Yule Lads of Iceland, the lads decide to spend the night at James’ house each night after delivering the gifts. How will James prevent his parents from finding out that he has these noisy house guests clanging pots, slamming doors and generally creating a huge ruckus? As I read this book, it was more fun than the 10 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed crossed with the excitement of The Night Before Christmas.This delightful book is for young children, but I found myself laughing out loud at some of the antics of the 13 Yule lads.

Book 2 Helga Returns

What happens when James discovers a huge foot print.Helga Returns traveled to Orlando in April 2014 to receive best children’s ages 9-12 award from Turning the Pages Magazine award ceremony.

James’ second adventure begins with a footprint. He once again calls out to his Icelandic magical friends, Syvok and Matthias, to discover what it means. He will find Helga, the troll who left the footprint.
James follows Helga to Yamas, the troll village. Will they be left on a glacier or will they save the Guardian Troll from danger? Will Syvok and Matthias reach James in time to save him when the earth tremors?

Helga Returns – A James and Syvok Adventure by Wendy Nystrom is about the adventures of James for the second time. He finds a footprint and he asks his friends Syvok and Matthias to help him find out about the footprint. They discover that it is Helga’s footprint and follow it into the troll village. Will they be able to save the troll and will Syvok and Matthias be able to save James?

It is an absolutely delightful story for children. The story has many underlying messages in it. I liked the fact that it introduces them to glaciers. Any book is educational for a reader because it will have information to offer that gives you an opportunity to learn. The characters of James, Syvok, and Matthias capture the interest of the reader but the most appealing character is Helga, the troll. Iceland as a backdrop is another interesting aspect of this book. It is a magical story of James along with the two Icelanders, Syvok and Matthias. The story does not lose its tempo and the beautiful illustrations give the characters an identity which makes it easier for children to relate to them.
The biggest advantage of adventure stories is that they encourage children to think and be imaginative. It gives them the freedom to dream, experiment, think differently, and create their own characters. I found the little trolls and dragonets very interesting and they add to the whimsical quality of the story.

This is the first in the James and Syvok adventures. My son inspired this story and my writing began after he really saw the moon sitting on the mountain one day while living in Iceland in 2005. James informing me that he was going to climb the mountain and touch the moon unlocked many stories for me that I did not know were there until that moment. James Saves the Moon traveled to Miami to receive a gold medal 2014 from Readers Favorite International Awards Children’s Fantasy.

“James Saves the Moon”, written by Wendy Nystrom, is a delightful children’s picture book that combines a child’s imagination with Icelandic mythology. The illustrations by Jim Weidman, in a blue tone with colorful characters, lend a mythological feel to the story of a young boy (James), who sees the moon over one of the high mountains and decides that if he climbs to the top of the mountain he can reach out and touch the moon. Slipping quietly out of his bedroom window, he sets out on his journey. On his way up the mountain he stumbles over some rocks and disturbs one of Iceland’s mythological figures (Syvok), who joins him on his journey. They suddenly realize that unless they move faster, the moon will leave before they make it to the top of the mountain. In order that they can move faster, Syvok summons a dragon (Matthias), who allows them to ride on his back. They discover that the moon is stuck on the mountain and they will have to help get it unstuck. The three work as a team to set the moon free and while doing so, James truly does touch the moon.The color of the illustrations by Jim Weidman and the very well-written story by Wendy Nystrom make “James Saves the Moon” a rare treasure for a children’s picture book. Its simplicity combined with the kind of story that stirs the imagination of a child make it something that will stick in the mind of the reader for a lifetime. This book gives a little bit of a taste of the colorful and flavorful history of Iceland and its traditions. It is highly recommended for its ability to help stir a child’s imagination. A wonderfully simple and delightful tale.

Authorpalooza,Cover Reveal Adventure and travel soccer!

Good Day Folks,

Wow, what an adventure of late. Seems non stop. I have been enjoying being one the organizers of local Authorpalooza events at my local library.

It was suggested at the Friends of Library meeting we should do something different for our annual membership meeting. So threw this out and it was supported.

Not only am I working with two great ladies, my luck continued. 4 Ferris State University Hospitality Students contact me wanting to help.

Just about everything is ready. We now have 20 talented wonderful authors coming to our newly renovated library Nov. 8th. People can come visit with and/or purchase signed copies of their books from the authors. Door prizes, children activities, cookies. The tables are assigned, flyers are out, authors interviews will be played on the radio station Y102, yard signs should be up. Let me introduce Jodi Stone. I have known Jodi for some time now. She is an inspiration, mentor, listener and best of all a friend. I loved her books the first time I ordered one. I messaged her and told her so and said hey we are with the same publisher. We are on this journey together.

I think her books are better than the Pinkalicious series. The Stone Sisters her main characters are wonderful characters. She not only writes but creates her own illustrations as well and she is a 3^rd grade teacher. She is the mother of three and loves themed parties.

This book is a tender endearing story. The story centers around a young boy who wants to give his mother a kiss for Christmas. He thinks this is the perfect gift.He convinces his father that the kisses are in the sewing section at the store. He looks up at the thimbles and there are different colored and decorated ones. Each child picks out a thimble kiss for their mother. She adores the special gift of love from each child and as each one grows up and leaves the house she sends them on their way with a thimble kiss to remind them of their mother. The book is not only about special Christmas memories but expressing love for mothers with a simple gift. This is a wonderful book of family love to share with children any time of the year.

Loss De Plott The Colour Red, by Stephan J. Meyers Magical Adventure!

As I read the book Loss De Plot The Colour Red, by Stephan J. Myers, at my table. I found my imagination travel as I read this fable. The book is a delight it is even better read out loud. The writing is rhythmic and musical to your ears, you may find yourself dancing and flying as the music fills your imagination it soars. Loss De Plot likes to draw and she draws a man with a hat the colour red. He arrives at the door with a book. The book is blank at first to Loss. He Gram tells her it is the book of dreams. That evening she has a dream and finds out about the man with the red hat. “for when red you draw, in a book of dreams, a simple drawing is not what it seems.” I think this fable kids would enjoy. They would find the magic of dreams to place in their book of dreams. The illustrations are fun and thought provoking as well a good addition to the story. My children enjoy their binders full of imagination. I think this book would open your children’s imagination maybe some adults too. It is reflective for adults of things that could have been or possible still, while for children it is of what could be. I think I will read more adventures of Loss De Plot by Stephan J. Meyers. Tomfoolery and 13 Yule Lads Adventure!

Tomfoolery and 13 Yule Lads of Iceland

I have been asked by many to do a post about the yule lads of Iceland. This was my favorite folktale while living in Akureyri, Iceland. When we moved back my kids remembered it and we were lucky the Yule Lads magically came to the U.S to fill my kids boots. My story adds a little twist as they one by one come down from the mountain starting December 12th. After meeting my young James and his mishap caused by the evil yule cat, that led James to thier evil mother Gryla aka Old Hag while their father watched Leppaludi aka Ragamuffin. Thank goodness James pals save him from Old Hags pot. The yule lads decide to stay in James’ room while they drop off a gift for every well behaved child and have fun creating some havoc and tomfoolery along the way for the town and James. One Yule lad almost does not make appearance but Matthias the dragon is ready to assist. This book has lots of action, adventure and fun on every page. I tell people it has three stories in one book. It introduces some of Iceland’s Yuletide season traditions. Iceland is full of magic and beauty.

I will introduce all the characters starting with the yule lads or Icelandic santas, depending on who is translating.

The 13 Icelandic Yule Lads:

December 12: Stekkjastaur—Stiffy Legs , his legs are stiff so he uses a cane but finds it difficult to milk lambs his favorite drink.

December 13: Giljagaur—Gully Jumper, jumps gullys where cows hang out to frighten them and loves the cream on top of fresh milk.

December 14: Stúfur—Stubby, the shortest of all the lads enjoys eating the flaky crust left on frying pans.

December 15: Þvörusleikir—Spoon Licker, loves licking wooden spoons left out

December 16: Pottasleikir—Pot Licker – Picks up soup pans will stick his head in the pan to clean up the leftovers

December 17: Askasleikir—Bowl Licker – He likes to lick bowls clean and is discovered under James bed with a noodle hanging down from his mouth.

December 18: Hurðaskellir—Door Slammer – He likes to slam doors and wakes James and his family up early in the morning.

December 19: Skyrgámur—Yogurt Gobbler – He likes yogurt and drops some on James cheek.

December 20: Bjúgnakrækir—Sausage Swiper – He likes sausage and the sausage hits James in the head.

December 21: Gluggagægir—Window Peeper – Likes to look at the lights inside windows, his glasses are rather surprising.

December 22: Gáttaþefur—Door Sniffer – He has a large nose which helps him sniff fresh bread in doorways.

December 23: Ketkrókur—Meat Hook – He swings his hook to pick up meat that may be left out.

December 24: Kertasníkir—Candle Beggar – He almost did not make it into town. He likes to steal candles from children and chew on them.

Grýla—Old Hag, their Mother, is hungry and likes to eat children, but her sons never bring any back from their travels down the mountain.

Leppalúði—Ragamuffin, the lads’ father, who is lazy and naps a lot.

Jólakötturinni—The Christmas Cat or Yule Cat. It is mean, looks for scraps, and will scratch or bite just because it wants to.

The Legend of the Santa Owl, by Dvora Swickle Adventure

The Legend of Santa Owl, by Dvora Swickle has to be one of my favorite Christmas reads this season.

The book starts out with a wonderful poem. A squirrel named Norman with a handful of nuts is running to visit his friend Ollie Owl. He of course trips over something and it is a beautiful glittery ball. Ollie has no idea what the glittery ball is so he fly’s to local farm to find out. Norman takes the ball home. Ollie looks in the window and sees a tree with no root all glittered and twinkling all around. The Mr. and Mrs. pulled out a box with glittery balls to place on the tree. He hears a poem about placing on tree and it will bring gifts on Christmas Eve. Owl fly’s back to Norman’s house and informs him. Norman hangs the ball in his tree home and went to bed and dreams of goodies. Owl watches at window waiting for Santa. But Christmas is for humans no animals he learns. They laughed. Ollie left sad and a tear in his eye, then he heard a ho ho ho and a gift floats down, which he catches. Ollie took the gift to Norman’s house for him to open. After that night Christmas is for animals too.
