Good Day,

On the Nook

Feeling philosophical today. Looking at the occupations through out the world and strike in Oakland yesterday. I see an awakening of the people. And its because of computers what ever form you are using. I also was looking at the Kindle Fire today. It sure looks sweet! I do like my nook! Most books come out on amazon first. Kindle Fire looks very easy to use. They accessories are nice do.

Will this help the Color Illustrated Children E book market?

Personally as an author of a Children’s Book at Solstice Publishing. I hope so! My girls want one or some other tablet. Amazon does control the market for books right now. Even though friends tell me the illustrations in my book James Saves the Moon look good in black and white. Color is much more appealing. Picture above is my book on the nook. Very appealing.

Will it help kids read more or better?

Personally I think so. Kids today are use to reading, listening, talking, mailing on computers. I believe we are seeing the end of massive print material. Good and Bad. We do learn from touching, feeling , smell, hear, visual.

Will touching a finger on a screen to change pages, answer questions, write reports lower learning?

I think not. Kids already in the schools are losing interest in the old format, sheets of paper and work books. The only negative is what will happen to writing skills.

We still need to learn to physically write words number.  Don’t we? Maybe Not?

Maybe this technology will free our minds to think about more things and documenting on a touch pad or keyboard will allow more creative thought and open the parts of the mind we do not use. I think its time for schools to look into teaching with some type of tablet or computer in the classroom at every desk. With smart boards on the walls.  Print textbooks have been gone for a while now at a lot of  school districts. I would not mind my children learning, taking tests, homework all on a tablet. Up front costs will be high. Down the road it will pay off. It will much cheaper to add a new chip and down load new materials. Best part will take up less storage area. I do disagree with getting rid of school buildings. Schools are vital for learning the 3 R’s, they also teach us how to live with others. We still need other humans in our lives besides our families. Especially troubled families.

Please feel free to add your opinion.

James Saves the Moon hanging with the Jack O' Lantern

James Saves the Moon trick or treating

James Saves the Moon Hanging in the Grave Yard

James Saves the Moon checking out the candy with the Zombie Groom

Some of you might be wondering why James Saves the Moon pictures everywhere. Well it started in July. We went on this fabulous trip west. We started in Michigan and ended in Vancouver, WA. My husband had a presentation at the University of Idaho. I was hoping for a couple of book signings. 5oth wedding anniversary party for my in-laws. We visited fun places and got together with friends and family. Dropped my book off in various towns. I am not sure who’s idea it was, but we decided to take a picture of my book at the places we visited. A copy is always in my purse. I liked the idea and it was a way hopefully to generate some interest in the book. Working on marketing was limited. Now its fun. My friends and family now say did you take a picture of your book or do you have your book.  So I hope you all enjoy James Saves the Moon adventures. I am. Hope to have Helga Return adventures soon to.

What have I been up to

Standard

Good Day Folks,

I have been busy. I am a PTO President so I have been writing and organizing a Ice Cream Social and Scholastic Book Fair for the past week. I am fortunate to have some fab Moms and Dads helping this year. I think we had 15 helping with the entire event this year. We had our library cut in half to accommodate a kindergarten classroom this year. Love those budget cuts forcing us to consolidate schools. So we lost our Early Childhood Center where all the Kindergarten classes were located in our small city. Very sad but we are adjusting. My 4th grade girls really like have the Kindergarten Kids in the school. They think they are cute and enjoy being reading buddies with the kids. On Fridays they have a reading buddy and can go down and take them in the hall and read a book to them or help them read a book. It is a nice program. It was so nice to have our Reading Heroes visit and help kids pick out books. I was pleased the Principal allowed me to show them my book. I am hoping one day my books will get into the Scholastic Book Fairs.

James Saves the Moon with Book Girl and Reader Hero

We had a ball at the Book Fair. We had to make changes. We had a scaled down version in the Library for two days then took it down and moved it to the Gym for our Ice Cream Social and Book Fair. It went smoothly(meaning everything went as planned) and was a blast. It was great to be able to chat with other parents we see in passing in the morning or dropping off for other activities these kids have.  I did manage to get some editing done and send my ideas for book marks off to the University Copy center to help with the design.  Boy I was tired last night. I was sleeping by 8pm.

If any of you host book fairs or other reading events at your elementary schools I highly recommend having Reading Heroes. The kids love it. Book Girl and Reader Hero will return in March for March Reading Month.

I also received my second illustration for my third book Tomfoolery and 13 Yule Lads of Iceland. Christmas is early for me. It is a Christmas story so I am hoping the publisher can fast track this one. The adventure is so much fun.

At peace and sad, but we will adjust

Standard

Hi All,

Today I volunteered at our  local school scholastic book fair. It was wonderful to spend the day with Kids coming in for a sneak peak and not wanting to leave because they love books. Half of the Library was full of  shiny new colorful books.  I walked in the room in the morning and instantly I felt better. Being surrounded by such bold colors and so many books is a intense happy emotion. For me it is like the perfect warm sunny autumn day. Then when the kids came in to the Library. To see their excited faces and treating the books with respect is a very good thing. To top off the day. I got to spend the day with other special Moms and one Grandma. Every one of us picked up books to show how cute, cool, or who would like this book.We had a chance to really talk to each other. Usually we see each other in passing as we drop off in the morning or at the end of the day briefly to get our kids to their activities or events after school.

Why sad. It also made me think what happens when we stop printing children’s books. Kids love to touch, and open the book to discover the journey inside. All of us that volunteered, have a bond with books.  I think being able to turn the page and see the next illustration that goes with the special words is very important. I think touching the book the child feels a deeper connection to the book. I know we will adjust. I just wonder what a scholastic book fair will look like in the future. Will everything be online and you pick and choose the book to download. Or will tablets be displayed in the libraries where you can plug in flash drive or phone to download the book. Will we lose some of the enjoyment of the stories journey because we are not turning the page? Will flashing screens be as fulfilling and cause the same emotion? I think we may lose a little of the fun of reading when we lose print on paper.  Like all things we will adjust and it may be even better as technology improves. We may end up with holographs or just down loading the story to our brains. No written word at all.

Interesting if we lose the written word will humans start over again and wonder did we have this information before as many believe that all information or answers has always been here we lost it and must rediscover it again. Are we on this path?

Enjoy your book journeys while you can. Who knows written word may leave us and information will just be down loaded straight to our brains. Then what?

Have a good evening, WB

Meet the Author at Great Lakes Book and Supply

Standard

Good Late Afternoon,

Really enjoyed Meet the Author today at Great Lakes Book and Supply. Gordon Henry Jr, is a wonderful poet and his prose is entertaining and thought provoking. Really interesting fellow. Really can feel the emotions of Native Americans psyche in his writings. As he read some of his poems and prose, I found myself visualizing what he was reading to us and thinking I wish I could sit and talk with these people and characters. We laughed, and felt the sorrow as he read. He is a true story teller. I highly recommend, The Failure of Certain Charms and other Disparate Signs of Life by Gordon Henry Jr.And he is from my home state MN. Enjoyed chatting with him after the program. Gave me some good reading material to help me with my novel the aliens among us. So cool.
As a friend told me one day. Writers are now your people. Grace was correct. I connect with with writers even if it may not be my genre.

Have a good evening and enjoy your adventures, WB
